Mesmerized

The morning arrived softly.

A warm breeze drifted through the city, carrying the scent of fresh rain from the previous night. The sky glowed with shades of gold and pale blue as sunlight filtered through the leaves of old trees lining the school entrance.

Students poured into the campus, laughing, gossiping, complaining about homework, and rushing to classes.

Among them walked a girl with a guitar case slung across her shoulder.

Her dark hair danced with the wind as she smiled at everything around her.

The school.

The familiar corridors.

The familiar chaos.

Home.

Anaya Singhania was back.

One year ago, she had left the city and moved to Delhi because of her father's business expansion. The move had been sudden and unavoidable.

And now...

After an entire year...

She had returned.

The cheerful girl who loved music.

The girl who laughed too loudly.

The girl who somehow made friends everywhere she went.

The girl who could never stay quiet for more than five minutes.

The same Anaya.

Maybe a little older.

Maybe a little wiser.

But still the same.

She pushed open the classroom door.

The chatter inside continued for exactly three seconds.

Then stopped.

Dead.

Silent.

Every head turned.

Anaya blinked.

"...Hello?"

For a moment nobody moved.

Then suddenly-

"ANAYA?!"

A chair crashed backward.

Another nearly tipped over.

Before she could react, three people practically launched themselves at her.

"YOU'RE BACK!"

"Oh my God!"

"NO WAY!"

Anaya laughed as she got trapped in a group hug.

"Siddarth!"

"Ishita!"

"Aditya!"

"You idiots!"

The four of them nearly fell over.

"YOU DIDN'T TELL US!"

Ishita smacked her arm.

"You wanted a dramatic entrance?" Siddarth accused.

"Main character behavior."

"Criminal behavior."

"Friendship betrayal."

Anaya gasped dramatically.

"I leave for ONE YEAR and suddenly all of you become judges?"

"We evolved."

"You didn't."

"Fair."

Everyone laughed.

Finally they pulled apart.

Anaya looked at them properly.

Siddarth Malhotra looked exactly the same.

Still tall.

Still annoying.

Still incapable of speaking normally.

Aditya Seghal was somehow even more dramatic than before.

Which honestly seemed impossible.

And Ishita-

Wait.

Anaya narrowed her eyes.

Then looked at Siddarth.

Then back at Ishita.

Then Siddarth again.

"...Why are you two standing suspiciously close?"

Both froze.

Aditya immediately burst out laughing.

"Oh, this is going to be good."

Anaya pointed dramatically.

"EXPLAIN."

Ishita groaned.

Siddarth looked oddly nervous.

Then Ishita sighed.

"We're dating."

Silence.

Anaya stared.

And stared.

And stared.

Then-

"WHAT?!"

The entire classroom jumped.

"You two?!"

"Yes."

"YOU?"

"Yes."

"THIS IDIOT?"

Siddarth looked offended.

"Rude."

"You're dating HIM?"

"I know."

"HOW?"

"I ask myself every day."

Aditya nearly fell off his chair laughing.

Anaya looked genuinely shocked.

"I leave for one year and the impossible happens."

"God works in mysterious ways," Aditya nodded wisely.

Siddarth threw an eraser at him.

It hit Aditya directly on the forehead.

"OW!"

"Good."

"Violence."

"Deserved."

Their argument immediately began.

"You're just jealous because nobody loves you."

"I have standards."

"You got rejected by a girl because you called her 'bro'."

"THAT WAS ONE TIME."

"Three times."

"Statistics are fake."

"Science says otherwise."

"Science also says you're ugly."

"THAT'S NOT SCIENCE!"

"It is now."

"Source?"

"My heart."

"Your heart is malfunctioning."

"Your face is malfunctioning."

Anaya laughed so hard she had to hold the desk.

Nothing had changed.

Thank God.

Then the classroom door opened again.

The noise gradually settled.

A boy entered quietly.

No dramatic entrance.

No loud greetings.

No attention-seeking.

Just calm silence.

He carried a few books in one hand and walked toward the back row.

His expression remained neutral.

Almost unreadable.

Anaya had never seen him before.

"Ekansh!"

Siddarth called.

The boy stopped.

"Come here."

Ekansh looked mildly confused but walked over.

"This is Anaya," Siddarth said.

"Our childhood friend."

"Recently returned from exile."

"I was in Delhi."

"Same thing."

Anaya rolled her eyes.

Then turned toward the boy.

"And this," Siddarth continued, "is Ekansh. Ekansh Singh Rathore. Future king of Rajasthan "

"The quietest human being alive.

We occasionally check his pulse to make sure he's still breathing."

"I hate you."

"See? That's the longest sentence he's spoken this month."

Everyone laughed.

Ekansh sighed.

Then looked toward Anaya.

And Anaya looked toward him.

The laughter faded.

The classroom disappeared.

The noise blurred.

The desks.

The students.

The walls.

Everything.

Gone.

Only they remained.

His eyes.

Her eyes.

Something strange happened.

Something neither could explain.

Neither could understand.

It felt like recognition.

Like finding a forgotten melody.

Like hearing a song you somehow already knew.

Neither spoke.

Neither looked away.

Time stretched.

A second.

Two.

Three.

Then-

"Do you think penguins have knees?"

Everyone blinked.

"What?"

Aditya looked completely serious.

"Penguins."

"Do."

"They have knees."

"How do you know?"

"Google."

"I don't trust Google."

"You trust TikTok."

"Exactly."

"THAT'S WORSE!"

The entire group exploded into chaos again.

Reality returned.

Anaya quickly looked away.

Ekansh cleared his throat.

Neither acknowledged what had just happened.

But both stole another glance.

Then another.

Then another.

Neither caught the other.

Or maybe both did.

Nobody knew.

Before the silence could become awkward, Ishita suddenly clapped her hands.

"Anyway."

Everyone looked at her.

"Anaya is an amazing singer."

Anaya froze.

"Oh no."

"Oh yes."

"Don't."

"Do it."

The entire class immediately became interested.

"You sing?"

"Really?"

"No way."

"How good?"

Anaya groaned.

"Ishita."

"Sing."

"Ishita."

"Sing."

"Ishita!"

"SING."

The chanting began.

Even Siddarth joined.

Even Aditya.

Eventually Anaya surrendered.

"Fine."

The classroom erupted in cheers.

She shook her head, laughing.

"You people are impossible."

"We know."

Anaya placed her guitar case on a desk.

Opened it carefully.

The familiar instrument rested inside.

The moment her fingers touched the strings, something changed.

The chatter quieted.

She adjusted the guitar.

Sat comfortably on a desk.

And began playing.

Soft notes filled the classroom.

One by one.

Gentle.

Beautiful.

Mesmerizing.

Conversations stopped.

Students turned around.

Even people outside the classroom peeked through the door.

Then she started singing.

" Zamane Ki Tarah Hum Bhi Tode Hai Gaye
Aise Tanha To Na The Tanha Chode Hai Gaye

Na Dil Se Wo Yaadein Jaaye
Na Raaton Ko Neendein Aaye

Aate Hai Phir Khwab Kyun Aate
Hain Kyun Khwab

Jo Thi Tere Ishq Mein Dubi
Un Ankhon Mein Tum Le Aaye
Aasu Behisab Kyun Behisab Aasu

Khair Hai Yaaron Kam Se Kam
Jaan Se Jaa Na Paye Hum
Khair Hai Yaaron Kam Se Kam
Jaan Se Jaa Na Paye Hum

Inkaar Ke Bahane Kayi Baar Karte Karte

Hamne Wahi Lagaya Dil
Jaha Dil Lagana Mana Tha

Akhir Wahi Kiye Sajde
Jaha Sar Jhukana Mana Tha

Kyu Zindagi Bita Di
Jaha Pe Ik Pal Bitana Mana Tha

Kyu Us Gali Mein Rehte The Hum
Jaha Roz Jana Mana Tha

Zamane Ki Tarah Hum Bhi Tode Hai Gaye
Aise Tanha To Na The Tanha Chode Hain Gaye "

The lyrics floated through the room like poetry.

Her voice was warm.

Smooth.

Effortless.

Every note landed perfectly.

Nobody moved.

Nobody interrupted.

Everyone listened.

Mesmerized.

Siddarth exchanged a look with Aditya.

Without saying anything, both immediately began tapping rhythms against their desks.

Creating a beat.

A drumline.

Supporting her music.

The song grew richer.

More alive.

More beautiful.

Laughter disappeared.

Even the most distracted students paid attention.

And among all of them-

Ekansh sat completely still.

His heartbeat had forgotten how to behave.

Every lyric reached him.

Every note.

Every breath.

Every smile.

His eyes never left her.

For the first time in a very long time...

The quiet boy wasn't thinking about assignments.

Or books.

Or exams.

Or anything at all.

He was simply listening.

Listening to a girl who had returned after a year.

A girl who carried sunshine in her smile.

A girl who somehow made an entire classroom stop breathing for three minutes.

And as her voice echoed through the room...

Ekansh realized something dangerous.

He wanted to hear it again.

And again.

And again.

The song ended.

Silence followed.

Complete silence.

Then-

The entire classroom erupted into applause.

And somewhere beneath the noise...

Two hearts quietly remembered the moment they first became aware of each other.

Neither knew it yet.

But this was the beginning.

The very beginning.

Of everything.

.
.
.
.
.

The rest of the day passed in a blur.

Every teacher who entered the classroom found students unusually energetic.

Nobody knew why.

Except the students of Class 12-B.

They knew exactly why.

Anaya Singhania was back.

And somehow, within a single morning, she had managed to become the center of attention without even trying.

By lunchtime, everyone had finally escaped to the cafeteria.

The five of them occupied their usual corner table.

Well...

Usual for four of them.

New for Anaya.

Lunch boxes were scattered everywhere.

Half-opened chips packets.

Water bottles.

Chocolate wrappers.

And enough noise to get them thrown out of the cafeteria if any teacher walked by.

"I still can't believe it."

Aditya pointed dramatically at Anaya.

She blinked.

"What?"

"You sing like that."

Anaya laughed.

"Oh, we're starting this again?"

"No seriously," Ishita said while opening her lunch box. "You never told us you improved this much."

"I practiced."

"Practiced?" Siddarth looked offended.

"That's what you call that?"

"What should I call it?"

"A supernatural gift."

Aditya nodded seriously.

"I agree."

"Thank you," Anaya said dramatically.

"No."

Aditya raised a finger.

"Don't thank me."

"Thank destiny."

"Thank fate."

"Thank whichever deity handles singing."

Anaya burst out laughing.

Meanwhile Siddarth stole a french fry from Aditya's lunch.

Aditya gasped.

The entire cafeteria probably heard it.

"THIEF!"

"It was one fry."

"That was my favorite fry."

"You don't know that."

"I did."

"You named your fries?"

"I get attached."

Siddarth looked horrified.

"You need therapy."

"I need my fry back."

"You ate it yesterday."

"Then bring it back."

"That's not how biology works."

"Excuses."

Ishita leaned against the table laughing openly.

"I swear you two share one brain cell."

"We take turns using it."

"Mostly him," Siddarth said.

"Impossible," Aditya replied.

"I've never seen you think."

The argument instantly escalated.

"At least I know penguins have knees."

"Oh wow."

"Still stuck on penguins?"

"It's important."

"It's not."

"It is."

"Nobody cares."

"The penguins care."

"THEY DON'T KNOW YOU EXIST."

"They will someday."

Anaya was laughing so hard tears formed in her eyes.

Even Ishita was struggling to breathe.

Across the table-

Ekansh quietly watched.

A small smile appeared on his face.

A rare one.

The kind nobody noticed often.

Then his gaze shifted.

Toward Anaya.

She was still laughing.

Still shining.

Still somehow making the entire table feel brighter.

He looked away immediately.

Then looked back.

Then away again.

His social skills abandoned him completely.

What was he supposed to say?

How did people start conversations?

Did normal people just... talk?

About what?

Weather?

Food?

The existence of penguin knees?

He mentally cursed Siddarth for somehow making that topic permanent.

Finally...

Gathering every ounce of courage he possessed...

He spoke.

"Your singing was really good."

The words came out quieter than intended.

Everyone stopped.

Anaya turned toward him.

For a second, Ekansh considered jumping out the nearest window.

Then she smiled.

A genuine smile.

Not teasing.

Not playful.

Just warm.

"Thank you."

His heart immediately forgot how to function.

"I mean it," he added nervously.

"The way you control notes is..."

He paused.

Searching for words.

"...beautiful."

The table became suspiciously quiet.

Anaya blinked.

Then smiled again.

A little softer this time.

"That's probably one of the nicest compliments I've ever received."

The nervousness in Ekansh eased slightly.

"Really?"

"Really."

And just like that...

The conversation continued.

Naturally.

Comfortably.

Without either of them realizing it.

Music.

Favorite artists.

Favorite songs.

Childhood hobbies.

School memories.

Random stories.

The discussion flowed effortlessly.

Meanwhile-

Three idiots stared at them.

Openly.

Shamelessly.

Horrified.

Aditya slowly turned toward Siddarth.

"Is he talking?"

"I think he is."

"Voluntarily?"

"I think so."

Ishita looked equally shocked.

"This is historic."

"We should record this."

"Frame it."

"Sell it."

Ekansh immediately glared.

The trio burst out laughing.

Anaya couldn't stop smiling.

For the first time all day-

The quiet boy looked genuinely comfortable.

.

.

.

Days passed.

Then weeks.

Then months.

And somehow...

Nobody noticed when five friends became inseparable.

It happened gradually.

Like sunrise.

So slowly nobody realized it was happening.

Until suddenly-

Everything had changed.

Lunches became longer.

Conversations became deeper.

Jokes became louder.

And the group became impossible to separate.

If one was missing-

Someone immediately noticed.

If one got scolded-

The others suffered alongside them.

If one laughed-

The entire group followed.

Study sessions became regular.

Though "study sessions" was an extremely generous term.

One evening-

"Can someone explain this chapter?"

Aditya asked.

Everyone opened their books.

Ten minutes later-

They were discussing whether pigeons paid taxes.

Nobody knew how they got there.

Not even them.

Another day-

They planned a serious group study call.

Within twenty minutes-

Siddarth and Aditya were arguing over whether cereal was technically soup.

"IT'S NOT SOUP."

"PROVE IT."

"It doesn't have broth."

"It has milk."

"THAT'S WORSE."

"You're worse."

"Your face is worse."

"Your logic is worse."

Ishita muted herself because she couldn't stop laughing.

Anaya nearly fell off her bed.

And for the first time-

Ekansh laughed so hard he had tears in his eyes.

The entire call froze.

Staring.

"Did..."

"Did Ekansh just laugh?"

"Guys," Aditya whispered.

"I think we're witnessing a miracle."

The months continued passing.

Festivals came and went.

Exams arrived.

Projects piled up.

School life continued.

But through everything-

The five remained together.

Late-night messages.

Endless calls.

Shared playlists.

Study notes.

Memories.

Secrets.

Laughter.

Comfort.

Home.

And somewhere amidst all of it...

Something else quietly began growing.

Something neither Anaya nor Ekansh spoke about.

Something neither fully understood.

Yet.

But every time their eyes met-

The world still seemed to slow down.

Every time she laughed-

His attention drifted toward her.

Every time he smiled-

Her day somehow became brighter.

The feelings grew.

Slowly.

Silently.

Like pages turning in a story.

Neither realizing they were already writing the beginning of something neither would ever forget.

Something beautiful.

Something dangerous.

Something capable of changing everything.

And neither of them had any idea what was waiting ahead.
