Chapter 14

: The Capture That Changed Everything :

Snow fell silently around them, soft flakes drifting across the dark forest floor, but the tension between Evelyn and Althea was sharp enough to cut through steel.

Asher kept his gun raised, body angled protectively in front of Evelyn, every breath calculated.

Althea Vargos didn’t blink.

Didn’t tense.

Didn’t flinch.

She stood as though she’d already won.

“Dr. Kael,” she said calmly, “your bloodline belongs to us. You were born for this.”

Evelyn’s chest tightened. “I don’t belong to anyone.”

Althea’s smile deepened.

“Oh, child… history says otherwise.”

Asher tensed, gun aimed at her head. “One step closer and-… ”

“And you’ll do what?”

Althea interrupted with a soft laugh.

“Shoot me? The Order isn’t foolish enough to corner the girl without a plan.”

She raised two fingers.

Shadows emerged behind her.

Six robed assassins.

Fully armed.

Silent.

Precise.

Evelyn inhaled sharply.

Asher stepped back, keeping Evelyn behind him, hands steady, but Evelyn could feel the shift in him.

He knew they were outnumbered.

Surrounded.

Outplayed.

Still, he didn’t lower his weapon.

Althea’s voice softened.

“Dr. Kael… we don’t want to hurt you. But we will if you force our hand.”

Evelyn whispered, “Asher… what do we do?”

His jaw clenched. “I’m thinking.”

But Althea didn’t give him time.

The Strike

A sudden flicker of metal flashed through the air-

Asher turned-

Too late.

A dart sliced across his arm.

He staggered.

“NO!” Evelyn screamed, grabbing him as he swayed.

Asher grit his teeth, shaking, trying to fight the sedative already burning into his bloodstream.

“Evelyn-…run,” he forced out.

“I’m not leaving you!”

Althea sighed.

“How dramatic. Tranquilizer B7 shouldn’t kill him, don’t worry.”

The ground beneath Asher’s feet seemed to tilt.

He dropped to one knee.

Evelyn wrapped both arms around him, panicking. “Asher, stay awake! Look at me!”

He lifted his head, eyes heavy but determined.

His voice was faint.

“Don’t… let them… take you.”

His body went limp.

Evelyn screamed, trying to wake him, shaking his shoulders, her breath coming in panicked gasps.

“Asher! ASHER!”

Althea approached slowly, like a teacher indulging a frightened child.

“He’ll wake soon. Provided you cooperate.”

Evelyn pressed her forehead to Asher’s chest, tears spilling.

“This wasn’t supposed to happen,” she whispered, voice cracking.

A hand touched her shoulder.

She flinched violently.

Althea’s voice had no warmth.

“Your destiny cannot be delayed any longer.”

Evelyn whispered shakily, “Don’t touch me.”

Althea’s smile didn’t fade.

“You’re stronger than you think. Come along.”

Evelyn stayed bent over Asher’s unconscious body, trembling with anger and fear.

She whispered, “I’ll come with you.”

Althea’s eyes gleamed with satisfaction.

“But,” Evelyn continued, lifting her head slowly, eyes burning with fury, “if he dies… I will destroy the Key myself.”

Althea froze.

Surprise flickered across her face for the first time.

Evelyn stood shoulders square, breath unsteady but voice firm.

“You need me alive more than you need obedience.”

Althea studied her for a long moment… then nodded once.

“Very well.”

Two robed figures moved forward, lifting Asher’s body with clinical care. Evelyn followed, never taking her eyes off him.

As they began walking deeper into the forest toward black unmarked vehicles, Evelyn whispered under her breath, barely audible:

“Asher… hold on.”

Snow whispered around them.

The trees closed in.

And Evelyn Kael was taken.
